Jefferson County Release Meanings
A Jefferson County release can mean freedom in the community, but it can also mean movement to a new custodian. The Jefferson County Justice Center may discharge someone under a pretrial order, after a county sentence is served, or after a court ends the basis for confinement. It may instead deliver the person to the Illinois Department of Corrections, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or another authorized agency. The 2021 state jail inspection confirms that Jefferson housed people for USMS and outside counties. For that reason, the key question is not just “When were they released?” It is “Released to whom?”
Three milestones must stay separate. Physical release ends one custody episode. Parole or mandatory supervised release, called MSR, permits community life while the state sentence remains active. Final discharge ends the correctional sentence or supervision authority addressed by that record. A court case may also continue after pretrial release. The jail record, state profile, supervision record, and court order can therefore show different dates without being wrong.
- Time served
- The ordered jail term has been completed, though another case or hold may remain.
- Transfer
- Custody moves to another agency; it is not a community release.
- Parole or MSR
- Release from prison into state supervision.
- Discharge
- The identified sentence or supervision authority has ended.
Jefferson County Release Paths
The authority and destination fields decide which search comes next. Illinois’s current pretrial system also means that older “bond-out” language should not be treated as the rule in every new case. Read the actual court order and the jail’s recorded action.
| Recorded path | What it means | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or court-ordered release | The person leaves jail while the case may continue. | Jail discharge and Circuit Clerk docket |
| Sentence served | The county custody term is complete. | Discharge record and sentencing entry |
| IDOC transfer | The person left the county jail but remains confined. | IDOC offender profile |
| Outside county or USMS transfer | Another agency now holds the person. | Receiving agency or federal court record |
| Parole or MSR | A state prisoner enters supervised community release. | IDOC status and PRB records |
| Final discharge | The named correctional authority has ended. | IDOC or PRB final record |
Jefferson County Release Record Fields
The strongest local proof is the Justice Center discharge packet or booking record with its release event. The state inspection documents positive identification before release or transfer, the date, time, and authority for the action, an injury check, a search, medication handling, property return, and transfer documentation. Request the recorded values rather than suggesting a release category to staff. Jefferson County has not published a controlled list of release labels.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name, alias, DOB, booking number | Connects the response to the right person and custody episode. |
| Booking date and holding agency | Identifies when and for whom county custody began. |
| Charge and case number | Links the jail event to the correct court file. |
| Release date and time | Records when physical discharge processing occurred. |
| Authority or classification | Explains the legal basis recorded by the jail. |
| Receiving agency or destination | Distinguishes community release from transfer. |
| Property receipt | Corroborates discharge processing and return of inventoried items. |
A booking image and booking sheet may be requested with the same custody episode, subject to lawful redaction. Do not seek unrelated medical, juvenile, victim, witness, or jail-security details. A narrow request is easier to match and leaves less room for confusion between repeated bookings.
Request Jefferson County Release Records
The Sheriff provides an online GovQuest public-record request form, as well as its FOIA information page. The portal accepts anonymous submissions, but an anonymous requester must save both the request number and security key. Jefferson County does not publish a local release-record retention period or fee schedule. Ask for an estimate before chargeable work.
- Identify one custody episode with the full legal name, booking number or date, and case number when known.
- Ask separately for the booking sheet, discharge event, release date and time, authority, and receiving agency.
- Request the releasable property receipt and booking photograph only if needed, and prefer electronic copies.
- Ask for the cited legal basis for any withholding and for all reasonably separable public fields.
- Compare the produced booking and discharge identifiers before relying on the result.

Illinois FOIA, 5 ILCS 140, generally gives a public body five business days to answer a noncommercial request, with a written extension allowed in stated circumstances. The first 50 black-and-white letter or legal pages are generally free, followed by up to $0.15 per page. Other media, certified copies, and court records may follow different rules.
Review the response against the question asked. A useful Jefferson County release answer identifies the correct booking episode, the time staff completed the discharge action, the authority for that action, and the destination. A system entry that says only “released” may describe removal from the jail module rather than freedom from every custodian. If the receiver is IDOC, another county, or USMS, continue the search with that agency. If the receiver is not stated, ask whether a transfer document or segregable destination field exists.
A “no records” response also needs a measured follow-up. Confirm spelling, aliases, the approximate intake date, the arresting agency, and the case number. Ask whether staff searched both current and archived jail-management records. Jefferson County has housed people for outside jurisdictions, so the Sheriff may have held the person while another agency owned the underlying case. That does not justify guessing. It identifies the next custodian to contact.
When two official timestamps conflict, preserve both labels instead of choosing one. A court order can authorize release before the Justice Center finishes identity, property, medication, hold, and destination checks. VINE may deliver a notice after the jail posts its event. Use the signed judicial order for legal authority, the jail discharge field for physical county-jail exit, and the receiving agency’s record for custody that continued elsewhere.
Jefferson Release Property Receipts
The property trail is unusually useful in Jefferson County. The 2021 inspection says discharge staff inventory and return property, obtain a signed itemized receipt, and retain that receipt permanently. Third-party pickup requires the detained person’s authorization and the recipient’s signature. When the fact of discharge or the return of an item is disputed, ask for the releasable receipt along with the date, time, authority, and destination fields.
The receipt is corroboration, not a complete release answer. It can show that property handling occurred, yet it may not prove whether the person walked into the community or entered another agency’s vehicle. Pair it with the destination and transfer record. Medical or injury details may be redacted and are not needed merely to confirm release.
Jefferson County Bond Release
The Sheriff’s posted bonding procedures say bonding service is available around the clock. The page lists a $25 booking fee, an $11 bonding fee, and $75 for each failure-to-appear charge. It also describes cash, a fee-bearing card, money order, and qualifying Jefferson County property bond, while stating that checks are not accepted and exact payment is required.
Those details need a current-case check. Illinois changed pretrial release law, while the Sheriff page retains monetary-bond terms that may reflect older or limited situations. A posted payment method does not prove that payment controls a new case, that a person has physically left, or that the charge ended. Confirm the applicable court order with the Clerk and the completed release with the jail.
Jefferson Release Statistics Context
No official annual release count, average stay, or current turnover rate was found. Two inspection snapshots provide dated context only. The 2018 inspection counted 185 confined people. The 2021 inspection counted 162. They are single-day population observations, not release totals, and they should not be used to estimate how many people leave the Justice Center in a day, week, or year.
The facility’s stated capacity also varies by source and date. The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association reports 249 beds, while the 2021 inspection used a constructed capacity of 252. The Justice Center was built in 2004. These facts help identify the facility, but none creates a current release statistic.
Find Jefferson County Released Inmates
Start with the agency that last held the person. The official Jefferson County inmate page directs users to the Sheriff’s mobile app rather than showing a web roster. No verified online 24-hour or 72-hour Jefferson County release feed, field list, update schedule, or retention rule was found. The Released Last 24 Hours and Released Last 72 Hours pages explain how to reconstruct those windows without borrowing a feed from another state.
- Check the official app for current custody, and record when the check occurred. A missing name does not prove release.
- Search the Jefferson court case by number and read the latest order, not just a hearing label.
- Call the jail at 618-244-8015 for immediate status, then request the recorded release event for durable proof.
- If the person entered state prison, search IDOC by number and read status, location, and all date fields.
- Use Illinois VINE for custody-change alerts and corroboration, while recognizing that it is not a certified history.
- Use BOP, USMS, or ICE tools only when the record identifies that custody path.
The captured official Sheriff inmate page illustrates the app-first limitation.
Because that page does not preserve a conventional released roster, the discharge request and court record are central to a past release search.
Jefferson Released IDOC Search
The IDOC current and former offender search applies to people committed to Illinois state custody, including releases from Big Muddy River Correctional Center. It does not cover a person whose custody began and ended only at the county jail. Search by IDOC number when possible. Last name and birthdate searches can produce more than one candidate.
| Search or result field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| IDOC number | Best public identifier for matching a state record. |
| Last name or birthdate | Discovery fields that require identity checks. |
| Offender Status and Location | Read first; work release still means custody. |
| Projected Parole Date | A future calculation, not proof of completed release. |
| Last Paroled Date | May describe an earlier release episode. |
| Projected Discharge Date | May mark the expected end of the sentence and supervision structure. |
| Sentence Discharged? | Applies to one sentence row; another row may remain active. |
Confirm the sentencing county, status, location, and every sentence row. If the fields conflict or a final date is needed, request written confirmation from IDOC. The Inmate Release Date page explains why projected dates move and why a county jail sentence follows a different statute.
Jefferson Release Court Records
Jefferson County offers two complementary court routes. ResearchIL/Tyler provides a case-information and document search, while Judici’s Jefferson County portal offers court search and docket access. Use the case number when possible. Read the resulting order, since a docket label such as “bond,” “detention,” or “status” does not state the outcome by itself.
The court record and jail record answer different questions. A signed order establishes legal authority and conditions. The jail discharge entry establishes physical processing time and destination. A mittimus, which is a commitment order, may explain why the person left the app for IDOC rather than the community. Sealing or expungement can restrict public visibility; a missing case is not proof that no case or release existed.
The official ResearchIL portal shows one durable route after a current jail entry disappears.
Match its case number and order dates to the booking and discharge identifiers rather than relying on a name alone.
Jefferson Release Transfer Checks
Jefferson’s mixed-custody history makes destination checks essential. The 2021 inspection documents USMS and outside-county detainees. A person can disappear from the same app because of community release, return to a requesting county, movement by the Marshals Service, or transfer to IDOC. Ask the Sheriff to name both the holding agency and receiving agency.
A 2009 ICE agreement provides historical context, but no current ICE contract was confirmed. Do not infer immigration custody from a name, birthplace, or app disappearance. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only after facts point to an ICE transfer. For sentenced federal custody, use the BOP inmate locator. Federal pretrial movement belongs with the federal docket and USMS pathway.
Jefferson Release Alerts and Supervision
Illinois VINE through VINELink receives custody and court data from participating county jail, IDOC, human-services, and circuit-clerk systems. Search one person, confirm the custodian and identifiers, then read whether the event says release, transfer, or another change. Phone, text, email, and app notification channels may be offered. Phone registration uses a four-digit PIN to acknowledge calls. VINE can lag and is not a certified discharge record.
After an IDOC release, the person may be under parole or MSR supervision. IDOC Parole supervises that state release, while the Prisoner Review Board sets or reviews specified conditions, violations, and final discharge. Jefferson County probation is separate and follows a court probation sentence. No general public statewide probationer lookup or complete parole-absconder list was verified. Begin with the court docket or IDOC profile, then use Parole / Probation for the correct office and verification path.
Jefferson Release Search Comparison
Match the question to the record owner. A live roster answers a present-custody question. It is not an archive of Jefferson County released inmates.
| Situation | Best starting source | What confirms release |
|---|---|---|
| Current county custody | Sheriff app | It does not; use the discharge record afterward. |
| Past county-jail episode | Sheriff GovQuest request | Date, time, authority, and destination fields |
| Illinois prison custody | IDOC offender search | Status plus completed release fields or written response |
| Court-authorized release | ResearchIL or Judici | Signed order, paired with jail exit record |
| Sentenced federal custody | BOP locator | BOP released status and date |
| Custody-change notification | VINELink | Useful alert, then confirmation from the custodian |
Jefferson County Release Facilities
Each Jefferson County facility or custody path has its own release owner. The Justice Center creates the local jail discharge record. Big Muddy is an IDOC prison. Municipal holding may end in citation, release, or transfer to the county jail. Federal and immigration paths require affirmative evidence of the receiving agency.
- Jefferson County Justice Center: county release or documented transfer.
- Big Muddy River Correctional Center: IDOC release, parole/MSR, or transfer.
- Jefferson County Municipal Holding: verify with the arresting department and Sheriff.
- Federal / USMS Custody Serving Jefferson County: federal docket, USMS, or BOP path.
- Immigration Custody Potentially Following Local Custody: ICE route only after a confirmed transfer.
